“ Before I Die” (BIF) is an open-call project created by Candy Chang , a contemporary American-based artist whose main passion is making cities as contemplative areas according to her belief: the greatest power of human being is given by introspection and collective wisdom gathered in public spaces; this is the only way to improve our communities and ourselves.

“Before I Die” is an interactive public art project that invites people to share their hopes and dreams publicly. After the artist and urban planner lost someone very close to her, she painted the wall of an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans using a chalkboard paint and stencils, reporting several times the sentence “Before I die I want to___ “.

In this way, passengers could use the chalk to complete the sentences with their desires directly on the wall.

“I wanted to know what was important to the people around me and I wanted a daily reminder” explained Chang.

On  scheduled days from 5 pm to 7:30 pm, ContestaRockHair salons turn into spaces where tune selectors actors and performers could share their stuff with us.

The artistic installation, by Aron Cheroes, is specifically designed for ContestaRockHair and was already presented in Rome Rione Monti salon.

Pictorial creativity needs a large space, sufficient enough to contain materials and thoughts that characterize the pictorial space where the artistic process is going on itself.

Accordingly to Aron Cheroes ( nickname for the artist Francesco Giannino) boxes represent rooms, chosen as a place for works creation and elected as treasure chest where memories are collected. During the event, Visitors can join this world by scanning a QR Code placed on each box.

Images and cubic portions of worlds are united by a creative field connecting the various rooms and a screen displaying 100 photos mounted in stop-motion.

The last connection is with the present, a live-moment in which the artist will paint during the event using an open box connected to other rooms, while images of the artwork in progress are displayed on screen in loop –motion.

Formica, wall papers, chandeliers and all the other furnishings come from that period; those bright 60s full of life and memories.

Every piece of furniture comes from an accurate selection and gives its contribution in representing the 60s – typical Italian – interior design.

BID is an innovative artistic project that allows the public to interact with the artwork, touching it and contributing to its implementation directly.”Anyone can pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives and share their personal aspirations in a public space,” wrote the American artist Candy Chang, creator of the project.

On Wednesday the 6th of April, BID panels in Pigneto will be cleaned and the participants have the opportunity to write their thoughts over again. We have noticed that BID project encourages people to write messages of hope, creating also episodes associated with touching and funny phrases written on the panels.

Thus, ContestaRockHair fans will be armed with colored chalks to fill the BID blackboards once again. The event will be also accompanied by Dj Nario Bros, whose music selection will be inspired by the BID concept itself, featuring professional photographer Giancarlo Mazzaro. Giancarlo have been working for a very long time with ContestaRockHair and during the event will play an emotional- detector role, taking picture of the participants while displaying their “Before I Die “ thoughts on a portable blackboards. They will be immortalized looking straight in their eyes, in order to catch their emotional side, their feelings while carrying a very personal message.

This is the difference that we wanted : when somebody looks at Candy Chang photographic reportage over BID worldwide, all the pictures are focused on people shoulders while they are working on the panels. There is no emotional trace about what they are writing or thinking in that moment. In that way, their state of mind is impossible to be caught. The pictures taken by Giancarlo throughout the event , will be published on the official BID website beforeidie.cc, in the section dedicated to ContestaRockHair http://beforeidie.cc/site/rome/
